Cyril Ashton - Chair

Bishop Cyril Ashton - Chair of Wigan Deanery TrustWe asked Bishop Cyril to share something about himself which might help us understand what makes him tick. This is what he had to say:

"Since moving from being Bishop of Doncaster I have loved working in the Diocese of Liverpool, and particularly having a deeply committed ministry with the clergy and people of Wigan. Bishop John and Bishop Bev have welcomed me and generously given me their permission to continue to serve in Wigan  and chair the Church Wigan Trustees.

"I am finding my time serving the Church Wigan community invigorating and deeply satisfying. The people are kind, the clergy are generous and I am surrounded by extraordinarily gifted Christians who are called to love and serve the whole of Wigan.

"I bring to my role as chair of Wigan Deanery Trust a varied experience over quite a number of years. Sixteen years as a parish priest in Lancaster, ten years involved in training clergy and laity in the Diocese of Blackburn, and twenty years as a Bishop.

"My wife Muriel and I have four adult children and nine grandchildren. Two of our children are Consultants in the NHS. Our other two children are teachers, one in a primary school and one in a secondary school. My grandchildren are currently trying hard to make me tech-savvy with varying degrees of success.

"I have written a few books, all published by Darton Longman and Todd, mainly to do with mission and accompanying Jesus into the margins of society I am a life-long biker and classic car enthusiast, and I get the impression that my wonderful wife is still patiently waiting for me to grow up."
